Double-digit quarterly growth for the mobile phone industry

More than 321 million mobile handsets were shipped globally in the second quarter of 2010, according to ABI Research. That's an increase of 5.9% on the previous quarter and 19.4% year-on-year.

Figures from Strategy Analytics differ slightly; they've calculated a 13% year-on-year growth to 308 million devices.

Quarterly results from Samsung, Orange and BT

Samsung Electronics has announced quarterly revenue of 37.89 trillion Korean won (£20.41 billion), up 17% year-on-year. Consolidated operating profit for the quarter was a record 5.01 trillion won, up 88% on the same quarter in 2009.

The end for dedicated Vodafone 360 mobile phones

There'll be no more mobile phones made exclusively for the Vodafone 360 service.

The network revealed two exclusive phones when the service was launched in September last year – the Samsung-produced H1 and M1 – but no more will be made. Instead, the network will focus on the service itself.

ARM, Freescale, IBM, Samsung, ST-Ericsson and Texas Instruments work to promote Linux-based mobile devices

ARM, Freescale, IBM, Samsung, ST-Ericsson and Texas Instruments have formed a not-for-profit software engineering company called Linaro. It plans to make Linux-based development faster and easier, with a focus on ARM chips.

The new partnership is committed to investing in open source projects that can be used by Linux-based distributions, such as Android, LiMo, MeeGo, Ubuntu and webOS. Its software and tools will be available for a variety of devices that utilise semiconductor System-on-Chips (SoCs), including smartphones, tablets, digital televisions, automotive entertainment and enterprise equipment.
