New GSMA report shows how mobile communications and economic growth are linked

The GSMA and professional services firm Deloitte LLP have released a report that looks at the economic benefits of mobile telephone services.

It notes that an increase in mobile data use has led to an increase in the GDP per capita growth rate, as has a move from 2G to 3G service.

Three adds more than a million UK customers in the last 12 months

Network upgrades delivering 3G mobile data speeds of 20Mbps

Three, the Hutchison 3G network in the UK, says it’s added more than 1.04 million customers in the past 12 months. It now has 8.8 million UK customers, with 301,000 joining in the last quarter alone.

The network is also deploying DC-HSDPA technology to upgrade its network and is increasing the speed of its backhaul connection to the internet.

Average 4G data tariff is 20% dearer than the 3G equivalent

International figures from ABI Research show that 4G data currently costs around 20% more than the equivalent 3G tariff.

However, the research company says there are signs that competition is already causing 4G tariffs to fall.

EE schedules 4G UK launch for 30th October

EE schedules 4G UK launch for 30th October

Following an agreement that the UK’s new 4G mobile spectrum would be available for use by next summer, Everything Everywhere has confirmed a launch date for its own 4G service and its EE brand.

EE will launch 4G in Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Leeds, Liverpool, London, Manchester and Sheffield on the 30th October 2012. A third of the UK population is expected to be covered by the end of the year.
