A report available from mobile software company Comverse (and conducted by Frost & Sullivan) says SMS text messaging will continue its dominance of the messaging arena for the foreseeable future, although it is likely to evolve with additional features over the next three to five years. This evolution is expected to add presence and location information to today's 160-character standard.

The European Commission has cleared the proposed merger of Orange UK and T-Mobile UK. As previously rumoured, the agreement is subject to the amendment of an existing network sharing agreement with '3' (Hutchison 3G UK) and getting rid of a quarter of the combined 1800MHz spectrum of the two companies. As a result, the Office of Fair Trading has withdrawn its request to have the case reviewed in the UK.

A new piece of European legislation about 'roaming' charges has come into effect today, 1st March 2010. It was part of the same announcement that capped the cost of sending text messages within Europe last summer.
This new law is designed to protect consumers from 'bill shocks' by allowing them to choose a cut-off point once their mobile bill reaches a certain amount.
