Augmented reality on mobiles arrives at Wimbledon

You wait forever for an augmented reality application… and then two come along in the same week. Hot on the heels of Dutch browser Layar comes some new technology from IBM. The computer giant provides most of the behind-the-scenes I.T. wizardry for the Wimbledon tennis championships and has created a beta program for Android phones called IBM Seer. When this year’s event starts you’ll be able to point your Android-powered smartphone’s camera at key locations inside the Wimbledon complex and it’ll overlay on-screen information to let you know what you’re seeing and what’s happening there.

New smartphone security solution includes remote locking

Digital security company F-Secure has said the newest version of its Mobile Security software will let handset users lock their phone remotely and can even wipe confidential data if the phone is lost or stolen.

The phone is automatically locked whenever the SIM card is changed and can be manually locked by sending the phone an SMS text message. It’s also possible to erase the phone’s data via SMS. F-Secure Mobile Security 5 is available for Windows Mobile and S60 3rd and 5th edition smartphones.
