Mark Bridge writes:

We’ve had another short working week here in the UK... although not necessarily if you’re working in retail. The reason for that shortness was a combination of Easter Monday and the Royal Wedding – an event that was rumoured to have its own mobile phone jammer.

As well as having another short week, we’ve also had another week of financial figures. HTC, Microsoft, Motorola, Samsung, LG and Everything Everywhere all published quarterly results, while RIM prepared us for a little disappointment when the current quarter’s figures are released.

Finances aside, I’d say the week’s biggest stories were Nokia’s plans to lose 7000 staff – which includes giving its Symbian people to Accenture – and Sony’s planned Android tablets providing a welcome distraction from its PlayStation Network problems.

Talking of Android, applications have been hitting the headlines recently. A new report says Android has more free apps than Apple, while another report says Apple will generate three-quarters of all application store revenue this year.

Mobile payments company Square has received investment from Visa for its smartphone payment service… and music search pioneer Shazam has picked up sponsorship from eBay for its app.

Finally, Apple has explained its policy about using location data on the iPhone. Contrary to last week’s claims of ‘spying’ phones, it says it’s not tracking the location of iPhones and blames a number of the issues on bugs that’ll soon be fixed. All they need to do now is convince the cynics and conspiracy theorists.
