Google Maps, Yahoo Weather and Facebook are UK's favourite mobile apps

The GSMA and comScore have just released data showing how UK mobile consumers use mobile applications. The data has been collected in partnership with mobile networks and is the latest in the GSMA Mobile Media Metrics series of reports.

Overall, almost 8.8 million UK mobile phone owners - 40% of the UK’s mobile internet users - accessed an app that connected to the internet during April 2011.  Google Maps was the most-popular app, with 6.4 million unique users, followed by Yahoo! Weather and then Facebook.

Henry Stevens, Media Director at the GSMA, said “We are excited to release the first public census-level data from the GSMA and comScore on mobile application usage. Apps have become an important entry point for accessing content on mobile devices and their usage will only increase with the rapid proliferation of smartphones. We look forward to delivering to the UK market these critical insights to help understand the mobile ecosystem.”

When it comes to operating systems, 65% of connected application users were using a device running Apple’s iOS. Android was next at 31%, while Symbian in third place had just 1% of of connected app users.
