Poor Nexus S sales? Blame the Carphone Warehouse's deals, says Carphone Warehouse subsidiary

Mark Bridge writes:

Last December we reported on the launch of the Google Nexus S, which was being sold exclusively in the UK by the Carphone Warehouse and Best Buy UK (which is run in partnership with the Carphone Warehouse).

A couple of weeks ago I saw a poorly-worded press release from mobiles.co.uk, which is part of the Carphone Warehouse retail family. “Google Launch The New Nexus” it shouted… despite the Nexus S having been launched well over a month earlier. The announcement appeared to be little more than a combination of an advertisement and an opportunity for the company to improve its Search Engine positioning.

I’d forgotten about it until I saw another release from mobiles.co.uk today. This one, subtly headlined “Google Nexus S Best Deals”, was also peppered with hyperlinks but at least the overall style had improved.

However, the message it contained was pretty blunt. Opening with “It's fair to say the Google Nexus S hasn't set the world alight”, the release went on to ask why the Nexus S was being outsold by the Galaxy S. Different launch dates?  Availability in network retail stores?  No. According to mobiles.co.uk, “the answer is deal strength”. That’s right. Apparently its parent company wasn’t trying hard enough.

Still, I have some good news for the team at mobiles.co.uk. Vodafone has now said it’ll soon be selling the Nexus S as well. There’s nothing like a bit of healthy competition to generate some stronger deals, wouldn’t you say?
