It’s time for another round-up of mobile industry news headlines from the past seven days.

As well as paying tribute to Steve Jobs, our podcast covers BlackBerry’s problems, 3G cross-network roaming on Everything Everywhere, 4G in the UK, Swype’s acquisition by Nuance, the mystery of Alien Dalvik, dodgy advertising and a new Nokia ringtone.

Voice technology company Nuance has acquired Swype, which launched its simplified on-screen text input service three years ago.

Swype was founded by Cliff Kushler and Randy Marsden.

That was the tagline for ShowStoppers, a showcase event that took place last night before today’s opening of Mobile World Congress. As you probably heard in today’s podcast, I went along and met a few of the participants.

The Swype text input application, which recently hit the headlines when a Samsung Galaxy S user managed to beat the SMS world record, is now available for a number of Nokia mobile phones.

Apple kicked off its 2014 Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) last week with an announcement about the forthcoming iOS 8 operating system for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. There was some catching up, some innovation and a couple of new services designed to work with home automation and health/fitness devices. What’s Tim Cook’s plan? We’ll have to wait and see.

Bitcoin, as Wikipedia tells me, is a peer-to-peer payment system introduced as open-source software in 2009. It’s a ‘virtual currency’ that can be used for transferring money and for buying products or services, although only if your chosen retailer accepts Bitcoin.
