The mobile phone doorbell has been with us for five years, not five minutes

Mark Bridge writes:

The 'mobile doorbell'. What a clever idea. If someone rings your doorbell when you're out, it'll call your mobile phone and will let you talk via an intercom to the person at your front door. You can even protect yourself against burglars by pretending you're inside the house.

Box Breaking in the UK

Mark Bridge writes:

In this week's podcast feature, Iain Graham has been taking a look at 'box breaking' in the UK. Box breaking can take a variety of forms but it generally involves buying a 'pay as you go' mobile phone at a price that's subsidised in part by a mobile network - and selling it at a higher price to someone who won't connect it to the original network. The package of phone and SIM card is effectively 'broken', with the SIM often sold separately.

Big Brother Camera Security app removed from Apple store after iPhone password survey published

Mark Bridge writes:

It may have been done with the best possible intentions, but developer Daniel Amitay has managed to upset a few people after releasing information gathered by his Big Brother Camera Security app.

The app helped iPhone users to protect themselves against thieves; not only did it lock the user's iPhone if left unattended, it would use the phone's camera to take a photo of anyone who tried unsuccessfully to unlock the device.

Mobile networks get serious about the health sector

In December 2009, Vodafone announced the creation of a mobile health unit that would work on mobile healthcare solutions. Last week Telefonica – O2's parent – launched a global e-health unit. And now Orange (which has had a dedicated healthcare division for four years) has announced Orange smartnumbers, a healthcare-specific service that's designed to give callers instant access to the best placed person or team available.

Orange smartnumbers automatically routes calls to available numbers. For example, if a doctor is unable to answer a call, it will be diverted to the appropriate colleague or team.

Martin Stiven, VP of Business at Orange UK's parent Everything Everywhere, said "We are extremely proud to be the first UK operator offering this valuable service to the healthcare sector.  We believe that there is huge potential for mobile communications to help the UK healthcare industry to provide better services to the public and increase efficiencies at the same time. As part of Everything Everywhere, Orange is committed to working with the very best partners to deliver pioneering new services such as Orange smartnumbers.  Our relationship with Resilient Networks plc is only the first step in our drive into the healthcare market.  With Resilient, Orange will be providing the technology to meet the needs of patients, professionals, managers and IT administrators, and public and private health providers alike."
