Android devices are the fastest-growing smartphone sector, says research

Mobile and wireless research firm iSuppli Corp says its Q2 2010 list of the fastest-growing smartphone manufacturers is dominated by companies utilising the Android operating system.

Windows Phone 7 devices to hit the UK on 21st October 2010

Today's the official launch of Windows Phone 7, the Microsoft mobile operating system that was announced in February. The company says Windows Phone 7 devices will go on sale from 21st October in "select European and Asian markets", with the USA seeing WP7 smartphones from 8th November on AT&T. In total, more than 60 mobile operators in over 30 countries have committed to offering Windows Phones.

Microsoft hits Motorola with Android-related legal action

Yesterday Microsoft filed a patent infringement action against Motorola that relates to Android-based devices, with the Motorola Droid 2 named as an example in most of the nine claims.

Horacio Gutierrez, corporate vice president and deputy general counsel of Microsoft's Intellectual Property and Licensing team, said "The patents at issue relate to a range of functionality embodied in Motorola’s Android smartphone devices that are essential to the smartphone user experience, including synchronizing email, calendars and contacts, scheduling meetings, and notifying applications of changes in signal strength and battery power".

HTCSense.com offers remote access to new HTC smartphones

As well as announcing the HTC Desire HD and HTC Desire Z yesterday, the Taiwan-based mobile manufacturer also revealed a set of online services called HTCSense.com. The name is shared with the 'HTC Sense' smartphone user interface.

New mobile phones from LG and HTC

On Tuesday, Nokia World witnessed the launch of three new phones (and much talk about the coming-very-soon Nokia N8). Elsewhere, LG revealed two new Android-powered handsets; the LG Optimus One and LG Optimus Chic. Both run Android 'Froyo' version 2.2; the Optimus One will arrive in Europe from October, while the Optimus Chic will follow in November.
