Telefonica and Mozilla plan 'open web' low-cost HTML5 smartphones

Telefónica Digital and Mozilla have revealed plans to create a new mobile platform. It’s called the Open Web Device platform and will use HTML5 standards to deliver a smartphone-like device without premium pricing.

A Qualcomm chipset is currently being used for hardware development.

Google criticised for iPhone cookie trick

Google and a number of other online businesses have been criticised after taking advantage of ‘cookies’ that apparently bypassed the security settings in the Safari web browser used by Apple computers and iPhones.

The Wall Street Journal reported that the specially-designed web code enabled users to be ‘tracked’ as they visited different web sites despite this type of monitoring being blocked as a default setting on the browser.

Opera Software acquires more mobile advertising businesses

Browser company Opera Software has announced the acquisition of two mobile advertising networks; US-based Mobile Theory and UK-based 4th Screen Advertising.

Two years ago, Opera acquired mobile ad service AdMarvel and later opened its own advertising scheme. This was followed by the creation of an Opera app store in 2011.

It’s not been a good week for Nokia staff, with 4000 of them likely to lose their jobs from factories in Finland, Hungary and Mexico. The company says it’s moving device assembly to Asia, where it’ll be closer to component manufacturers. The three scaled-down factories will remain open with a new focus on smartphone customisation.
