Apple announces iPad mini and updated fourth-generation iPad

The much-rumoured iPad mini has been revealed by Apple. It’s available in WiFi-only and WiFi + mobile versions, has a 7.9-inch display, a front-facing camera, a 5-megapixel rear-facing camera and a display that boasts the same resolution as the first iPad models.

Pricing starts from £269 for the 16GB WiFi-only model, which goes on sale from 2nd November. Mobile-enabled versions will follow later in November.

O2 introduces new mobile Point of Sale service with Visa Europe

O2 UK has launched a new Mobile Point of Sale service that enables retailers to accept card payments on a smartphone or tablet.

The service, which is called mPOS, has been created in partnership with Visa Europe and Global Payments.

American Express invests in iZettle mobile payment service

Mobile payment service iZettle says American Express has joined its list of financial backers. The latest funding round already included over £20 million from MasterCard and venture capital funds including Greylock Partners, Northzone and SEB Private Equity plus initial investors Creandum and Index Ventures.

iZettle will use the funding for product development and expansion into new markets.

Most consumers in developing economies are aware of mobile money services

A new study from Visa and Fundamo, the mobile money platform Visa acquired last year, reveals that the majority of consumers in six developing countries are already aware of mobile money services.

In addition, nearly 90% of consumers expressed an interest in making payments or sending funds from their mobile phone in the future.

Qualcomm and Project RAY announce eye-free smartphone for blind and visually-impaired people

Project RAY, which designs accessibility tools for blind and visually-impaired people, has announced a new mobile interface that’s designed to be used without sight.

It’s been designed in partnership with the Qualcomm Wireless Reach initiative and uses a standard Android smartphone powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon processor.
