Three UK talks HD Voice

Three UK has been talking about High Definition voice calls, which were launched on the network a couple of weeks ago.

As with the Orange HD Voice service, which was rolled out last year, the service is only available between compatible phones in 3G coverage on the same network.

LG Optimus 3D smartphone is launched officially

The LG Optimus 3D, which was unveiled at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona earlier this year, has been officially launched today.

It'll arrive in Europe first, with availability in more than 60 markets around the world to follow over the next several weeks. The Carphone Warehouse and Best Buy will have exclusive rights for the UK launch.

RIM warns of redundancies as financial year has 'challenging start'

Research In Motion has published its quarterly results for the three months ended 28th May 2011; the first quarter of its 2012 financial year.

It says revenue was up 16% year-on-year to $4.9 billion (but down 12% on the previous quarter). RIM shipped approximately 13.2 million BlackBerry handheld devices and approximately 500,000 BlackBerry Playbook tablets in the quarter.

Box Breaking in the UK

In this week's podcast feature, Iain Graham has been taking a look at 'box breaking' in the UK. Box breaking can take a variety of forms but it generally involves buying a 'pay as you go' mobile phone at a price that's subsidised in part by a mobile network - and selling it at a higher price to someone who won't connect it to the original network. The package of phone and SIM card is effectively 'broken', with the SIM often sold separately.

App discovery gets smarter

I've written previously about the changes happening to mobile application stores. Last week I was talking to Todd Levy about the family-friendly application store he's planning to launch. He explained how BloomWorlds would be curated to provide trusted reviews that weren't skewed by the app developers themselves.
