There could be 400 million ‘green’ app downloads within 5 years

There’s not just a market in green handsets and eco-friendly chargers. There’s also a lot of potential for environmentally-aware mobile applications, according to the latest report from Juniper Research. It reckons the volume of 'green' application downloads to mobile handsets could exceed 400 million by 2014, helped by areas dedicated to green-themed mobile content and apps within operator and OEM application stores.

Google announces free navigation service for Android phones

One day it’s a rumour, the next it’s reality. Google has just announced a beta version of Google Maps Navigation for smartphones running Android 2.0. It uses information from Google Maps to create a 3D sat nav service with turn-by-turn voice guidance and automatic rerouting. It also includes Google’s voice search and live traffic data. The service is currently only available in the USA, not least because the new Motorola Droid from Verizon Wireless is the first handset to run Android 2.0.
