IDC says mobile phone sales up almost a fifth last year

As manufacturers release their quarterly results, so analysts calculate what the figures mean. The latest of those reports comes from the International Data Corporation, which says the worldwide mobile phone market grew 17.9% in the fourth quarter of 2010.

Its Worldwide Mobile Phone Tracker report says 401.4 million mobile devices were shipped in Q4, bringing 2010’s total to 1.39 billion units. That’s up 18.5% from the 1.17 billion units shipped in 2009.

Record quarterly revenue for Microsoft

Microsoft Corp has announced record second-quarter revenue of $19.95 billion for the three-month period that ended on 31st December. Operating income was $8.17 billion and net income was $6.63 billion.

Sales of the Kinect sensor – and associated Xbox sales – drove a 55% growth in revenue for Microsoft’s Entertainment & Devices Division.

Record quarterly results from Samsung

Samsung Electronics has announced revenues of 41.87 trillion Korean won (£23.68 billion) for the fourth quarter of 2010, a 7% year-on-year increase.

This brings Samsung’s total 2010 revenue to an all-time high of 154.63 trillion won, up 13% from 2009.

Research says smartphone shipments rose in 2010 as the biggest manufacturers lost market share

Research from Strategy Analytics says worldwide shipments of smartphones were up 75% last year, almost reaching 293 million units.

This compares with 151 million smartphones in 2008 and 175 million in 2009.
