Oracle to buy telecoms management specialist Tekelec

IT business Oracle has agreed to acquire Tekelec, a US-based business that specialises in helping communications networks manage their data. Tekelec’s technology is currently used by more than 300 service providers in over 100 countries.

Oracle says it plans to combine Tekelec’s services with those from Acme Packet, another recent acquisition.

Facebook brings VoIP calls to the UK

Facebook is reportedly adding VoIP calling to its iOS Messenger app for UK customers, following the introduction of free voice calls for users in Canada and the USA earlier this year.

Customers with the Facebook Messenger iOS app will be able to use the app for voice calls as well as text-based messaging.

4G could more than double the value of UK mobile shopping this year, according to eBay research

Introducing 4G mobile phone services to the UK could help boost the retail economy by around £1.8 billion this year, according to figures compiled by retail analysts Conlumino and published by eBay.

That’s a 113% year-on-year increase in mobile shopping when compared to 2012.

Apple reported to have acquired indoor location company WifiSLAM

The Wall Street Journal says Apple has acquired WifiSLAM, a Californian company that uses WiFi signals to calculate a user’s location indoors as an alternative to GPS.

The deal to buy the two-year-old business is reported to be worth around $20 million.
