Nokia announces map and traffic solution for vehicle manufacturers

The Nokia HERE mapping business has announced a ‘Connected Driving’ package to help vehicle manufacturers and in-car technology suppliers connect cars and drivers to key cloud-based services.

This new combination of services will be demonstrated at the International Motor Show in Frankfurt next week.

Android vice president leaves for Chinese mobile phone manufacturer

Hugo Barra, who is vice president of Android product management at Google, is leaving to join three-year-old Chinese mobile phone manufacturer Xiaomi.

Mr Barra joined Google from language technology company Nuance 5 years ago, later moving to work on Android.

Vodafone selling its share of Verizon Wireless for $130 billion

Verizon Communications has agreed to buy Vodafone’s share of its US mobile phone business for $130 billion.

The deal will involve Verizon acquiring Vodafone’s US business - which owns 45% of Verizon Wireless - for $58.9 billion cash and most of the remainder in stock. As a result, Verizon will gain complete ownership of the wireless business that bears its name.

Acer confirms new flagship smartphone with 4K video recording

Acer has confirmed that a new flagship smartphone will be announced at the IFA 2013 electronics trade show this month.

The Acer Liquid S2 will have a 6-inch HD screen and the ability to record video in 4K resolution, which is four times the resolution of HD.

Selex ES avoids 4G LTE disruption by upgrading UK air traffic control radar systems

Aerospace technology company Selex ES has confirmed that it upgraded air traffic management radar in London and the south of England ahead of last week’s 2.6GHz 4G launches by Vodafone and O2.

Selex ES is responsible for a project that’ll see it upgrading more than half of the UK’s air traffic management S-band radar systems to avoid potential disruption from 4G mobile networks.
