The 2010 International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) starts on 7th January in Las Vegas. It's produced by the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA), a trade association with over 2,000 members in the consumer technology industry. There'll be 2,700 exhibitors at this year's show – and, almost inevitably, a fair amount of telecoms companies.
Yet the first of next year's big mobile stories may not come from CES 2010. Google has just announced an 'Android press gathering' for 5th January, which could reveal more about the HTC-manufactured Nexus One handset that Google staff are currently using.

Researcher Karsten Nohl has told the Chaos Communication Conference in Berlin that he's compiled enough data to crack the encryption used for GSM calls and messages. This would enable anyone with a powerul laptop and a few hundred pounds of equipment to listen in to mobile phone calls.
It's a project he started in August to illustrate the flaws in GSM encryption. More information is expected on Wednesday when Mr Nohl demonstrates the current state of his research.
